Demystifying Local Planning

At last night's session - session 2 - cover a great deal of information about urban planning - design, legislation, Acts, who-does-what, policies and trends. For those of you who want to see the presentation from Paul Bain and Jane Welsh, we'll be posting it early next week - in the meantime here's the first 9 to whet your appetite! 1. In anticipation of the second Toronto Civics 101 session, I sat down to put down my questions and thoughts on the session topic: "Local Planning Demystified".

I have spent every day for the past 5 years living in an under development residential neighborhood. This is synonymous to having witnessed quite a few high rise residential projects break ground each year. My once unobstructed view is being blocked by pillars of concrete of the 30 stories condo across the street as we speak. I have witnessed the disappearance of green spaces and arrival of congestion. These condos drive the market, usually up; and are essentially privatizing the space for those who can afford it.

I don’t know much about the rules that govern the decision making and I don’t anticipate today’s session to make an expert of me in this area. The graph provided in the session’s handout depicts all layers that go in the “Planning Process”. I realize that there is a lot involved.

    The Planning Process
-For applications that require public meeting
    -Applicant submits complete application
    -Application circulated by staff
    -Preliminary report to community council
    -Community consultation
    -and more....

I do however see that community, my neighbors and I are given a chance to participate; to engage with city planners and developers. That’s what I intend to discuss and learn tonight. How can I become an effective part of the (city planning) process? This I will know after “Local Planning” has been “Demystified”. Visda,Civics101-2009
